Week 47: 1st–7th February 2021

  • Media reported that increase of income of Philip Morris International (PMI) during the last quarter of 2020 was apparently due to more users shifting from cigarettes to smoke free products during the COVID 19 pandemic.[1]

Week 48: 8th – 14th February 2021

  • Media reported that Japan Tobacco International (JTI) plans to launch a new heated tobacco product in the second half of 2021. [7]
  • In the USA, media reported that the Altria Group was registered as a lobby group on cannabis policy in Virginia. [williamsmullen.com/people/elizabeth-o-rafferty Elizabeth Rafferty], the Director of government relations for Williams Mullen office, was the nominated as the lobbyist.[8]
  • Chief Marketing officer of BAT issued a media statement on a plan of British American Tobacco (BAT) to expand their business to incorporate cannabis, especially cannabidiol products.[9]
  • Media reported that the duty-free business of British American Tobacco (BAT) in Malaysia was negatively impacted due to travel restrictions existed throughout the 4th quarter in 2020. Further, it mentioned that there was a fall of sales volume of 8%, of which, 3% was due to COVID 19 pandemic.[10][11]
  • Masamichi Terabatake, President and the CEO of Japan Tobacco International (JTI), stated that the reduction of cigarette sales volume was lower than expected, claiming it is due to reduced illicit trade resulting from the border closure in Japan. He further mentioned that there is a negative impact on duty-free trade due to travel restriction and lockdowns.[12]

Week 49: 15th – 21st February 2021

  • Media quoting a survey in South Africa, National Income Dynamics Study – Coronavirus Rapid Mobile survey (NIDS-CRAM), reported that market share of cigarettes sale of transnational tobacco companies changed from 70% in pre-ban, to 33% during the ban and to 50% after the ban. The same report stated that 8% of smokers quit due to the ban and 50% of those who quit during the ban restarted when the ban was lifted.[20] As stated in the previous month’s page, trade restrictions leading to an increase in illicit trade is a common argument made by the tobacco industry and its front groups.
  • Media reported that Philip Morris International (PMI) launched the heated tobacco product (IQOS 3 DUO) in Lebanon in the background of dropping adult smoking rates with the COVID-19 pandemic.[21]
  • In Sri Lanka, media quoting the Ceylon Tobacco Company PLC (CTC) reported a fall of cigarette sales in 4th quarter of 2020 due to reduced accessibility for consumers and the retailers following the curfew and the lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic.[22]It further reported that the net profit is 15.57 billion and it is a loss of 10% in the year 2020.[23]
  • Media reported that the new users of e-cigarettes, heated tobacco and oral nicotine products of British American Tobacco (BAT) has increased by 3 million during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.[24][25]
  • Media quoting British American Tobacco (BAT) reported that their annual earnings were higher than the estimated despite the pandemic due to increase in sales of other nicotine products. It further reported that the sale of cigarette sticks fell by around 5% while the profits increased by around 9% in 2020.[26][25]
  • Altria, presented in the Consumer Analyst Group of New York Conference 2021 their concepts on ‘’’Moving Beyond Smoking’’’.[27]
  • In Croatia, media reported that the government is planning to increase the excise tax on heated tobacco products due to economic consequences of COVID-19 pandemic. However, they also reported that this action would be beneficial for British American Tobacco (BAT) as it has the largest market share on tobacco. Further, it mentioned that the Prime Minister of Croatia had a discussion to maintain the investments of BAT under an agreement as it is the “country’s largest foreign direct investor”.[28] Article 5.3 of Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) recommends governments not to favour tobacco industry in any policy decision as it has a fundamental conflict of interest with public health.
  • Media reported of an increase in net profit of British American Tobacco (BAT) Uganda by Ugandan Shilling 4.278 billion despite a drop in sales volume of cigarettes by 1% due to COVID-19 in 2020. [29]
